Overall Reflection
Writing this annotation allowed me to focus on the single aspect of communication. I have realized that nothing can be done in a classroom without effective communication. I believe it’s important to use many different types of communication strategies with your students. I believe it’s important to demonstrate and model what your students are supposed to do, so they can see the correct way of doing things. I will continue to develop new ideas and ways of communicating with my students, parents, and other colleagues to ensure the best education for my students. My modified lesson plan as well as this annotation has helped me understand the importance of making sure every student is communicated with effectively. Not every student learns or speaks the same, but finding techniques and strategies to reach every type of student, including English Language Learners is very crucial to the success of your students. It is important that ESOL modifications are still conclusive to the rest of the lesson for the native speakers of the class. Basically, making modifications for some students should not lessen the communication for other students. My third evidence is one example of the many opportunities I had to implement different kinds of communication in the classroom. I have learned (and am still learning) that it doesn’t always have to be me communicating new information to the students; sometimes I can just step back and use different forms of media communication. The use of video clips in the classroom has showed me that this is a fun way for students to learn about a new (or old!) subject, and it’s also a great ‘being there experience’ for my ESOL students. They hear the word ‘groundhog’, and now they have a picture in their mind to connect to that word. Every single day I am in the classroom I strive more and more to incorporate different media outlets in my lessons to help communicate with my students. Nothing is more important than communication when creating and up keeping a successful learning environment, and I believe this lesson plan shows one way in which I have used many different types of strategies, including media, to communicate with my students and help them develop and grow.
