Evidence #1: Weekly Reflection Journal
This evidence is my 12th weekly reflection journal from EDE 4942, Level II Internship. In this journal, I discuss my experience going over the Code of Ethics with my cooperating teacher, Mrs. Heres. I explain what we talked about, what I learned, and my reflection about the experience.

There are many ways that this evidence meets the criteria to address AP#6 Ethics. The Code of Ethics addresses several ethical subjects such as confidentiality, prejudices, lying, and discrimination of many kinds. These relate to teachers in the classroom because it is their job, first and foremost, to keep every child mentally and physically safe. Confidentiality is pertinent in the schools because you, as the teacher, are with your students for so much time during the week and you will learn many things about them. They might tell you things that they won’t want their parents to know. Sometimes it is very easy to talk about your students with your colleagues or other adults. Sometimes, you might also feel it is necessary to share some information for the sake of the students’ health or safety. The issue of ethics comes in whether or not the information you are sharing could be helpful or harmful to the student. Dealing with discrimination and prejudice is another ethical area you must be aware of as a teacher. It is of upmost importance to treat students, and colleagues as well, with the same respect regardless of race, sex, age, nationality, beliefs, disabilities, or background. I believe that sometimes people discriminate without even realizing it. Sometimes I feel like I refrain from saying some things to particular students because I feel like they wouldn’t understand for certain reasons. This is not fair to them because they deserve the same respect and education as every other student. This is another issue to be aware of in the classroom. Basically, I learned that it is crucial for teachers maintain honesty and integrity in all aspects of their professional responsibilities.
I have incorporated the information in my evidence into my teaching in my Level II internship. I have taken what I have learned from the Code of Ethics and incorporated aspects of it into my teaching. I implement actions that will have a positive impact on all of my students’ learning. Along with my cooperating teacher, Mrs. Heres, I developed strategies for myself to ensure I adhere to every rule of the Code. To make sure I adhere to the confidentiality code, as discussed in my evidence, I ask myself questions such as why am I sharing this information? Is sharing information going to help the student? Is the person I am sharing the information with going to help the situation? I believe asking these questions will help determine if it’s a good idea to share any information about a student or not. There have been several times where my students have confided in me information that they wanted to keep private. Some information I knew was simply trivial and I had no problem keeping it to myself. I want the students to feel like I am someone they can trust and talk to about their problems. But sometimes, the students would tell me things that I would feel that if I didn’t say something, I would be jeopardizing their safety. This is where I ask myself these questions to decide whether or not it is ethical to share the information. I also have set up a system in the classroom to ensure a safe and healthy learning environment for all students. Some of my students have a tendency to get angry and not know how to control it. We have been working on managing anger and finding positive and productive ways of dealing with issues. In my classroom, every Thursday afternoon, we have a class discussion where we are free to talk about anything that’s bothering us. Whether students are having problems with other students in the class or in the school or whatever, we talk about it in a safe environment and I model ways for students to work through their problems effectively. When students feel safe and comfortable, they will be so much more focused on learning.
