Overall Reflection
Not only was this assignment very important for learning to work together with peers and colleagues, but you really learn a lot about yourself as a teacher, and you get to incorporate new ideas into your teaching schema. Having my peers observe me and critique me was beneficial because they noticed strengths and weaknesses of mine that I might not have necessarily noticed. Also, being able to observe other interns teach gave me insight to ways of teaching that I could incorporate into my own instructional approaches. The main focus is to understand and implement different theories and concepts of teaching to help foster the development of every student in your classroom. I feel that after this assignment and writing the annotation that I have a better understanding of this. From implementing this lesson plan and writing this annotation, I never really realized how much learning theories come into play in every day instruction. I think I use theories for learning and classroom management way more often than I realize. It comforts me to know that if I am having a problem in the classroom, there is probably a theory that can help me! OF course, I want my students to develop the most they possibly can during the time I am their teacher, and it is important for me to use these theories in my teaching to promote and foster development in my students. Managing classroom behavior is a skill that takes time and practice for teachers to master. Incorporating classroom management theories is a great way to help you do this. I have already noticed such a difference in my students since I implemented both Skinner’s and Dreikur’s ideas into my teaching. It is definitely important to try to understand why students misbehave. I have learned that you have to keep their feelings and well-being a priority. Simply punishing a misbehaving student isn’t going to do any long-term fixing. Keeping all that in mind, you can focus more on eliminating the negative behavior before it happens instead of fixing it when it already has happened. It is very important for me that every one of my students develops to their highest potential. It is my responsibility as their teacher to push them so they learn as best they can. It is a fine line between not pushing hard enough, and pushing too hard. By using scaffolding techniques, I really noticed my students learning and retaining information much more than if they were just working independently. Also, modeling lessons and information for them helps them remember and understand the information so much more. After doing this lesson and writing this annotation, I have taken several different theories and implemented them into my teaching. I truly feel my students are developing into better learners because of this.
