The fifth grade curriculum is designed to be the same for all fifth grade students. However, no two fifth grade students are completely alike. It is the teacher’s job to present the information to the students in a way that is engaging, and that they will benefit from. The day before I teach a lesson, I thoroughly peruse the information to make sure I can teach the information backwards and forwards. Since not all students learn the same, some will not benefit from one type of teaching strategy. It is also my job to think of ways for all students to develop from every lesson, not just presenting information to the students and hope that they understand it.
This is why I like to stop frequently, especially during reading, and give the students definitions examples of the vocabulary used in the story. Sometimes information is written in a way that I feel only a college student could understand. It is my responsibility to take that information and modify it in a way that the students will understand. I have learned to use examples and non examples to teach vocabulary or certain subject matter so it reaches all students. The most important thing is for the teacher to be prepared. You need to think of the needs of all your students and modify your lessons to meet these needs, even if you have to teach several different ways.
