Evidence #1: Classroom Management Plan
My evidence for AP#11 is the Classroom Management Plan done in EDE 4301: Classroom Management, Safety, Ethics, School Law. The assignment required me to create every aspect of my future classroom. This included my ideas, rules, likes, dislikes, and lesson implementations. I discussed communication with students, parents, and other teachers. This management plan also includes my teaching philosophy inspired by ideas of theorists such as Dreikur, Ginott, and the Canter sisters.

The classroom management plan meets AP #11, Role of the Teacher, in various ways. When I was writing my management plan, I took a lot of time to think about the communication with my students’ parents and family, and why this is important. I feel it is important to developing and maintaining a positive relationship with the parents because they can help motivate and develop their children’s performance in every aspect. Ways to do this, as stated in my evidence, are establish these relationships early on in the school year. Don’t wait until test scores come back or something goes wrong. Parents love to hear when their children are doing well, and students LOVE for their parents to hear this as well, so I believe in communicating regularly through phone calls, notes home, emails, and agenda books. Every time my class starts a new unit or lesson, I want the parents to know. I intend on sending a note home for every new unit that is covered. I will also assign homework to my students that involve parental involvement. An example is this is to say “help your child(ren) learn responsibility by making a chart of every time they complete all their household chores”. I also discussed in my paper the importance of communicating ideas with fellow teachers. I think it’s a good ideas to have meetings solely about what is going on in everyone’s’ classrooms, what they are doing that is working, and what things maybe did not work so well. Maintaining a successful classroom environment is impossible with only the teacher’s input, so I believe it is my duty to involve those who can add a positive impact to my class.
I have implemented the ideas and strategies discussed in my classroom management plan in my current level II internship 5th grade classroom. My evidence states that my first priority as a teacher is to show my students that I am there to foster their success and that I truly care about them. I feel students learn better when they are challenged to think critically (I love to ask ‘why’ questions to make them think) and when they know that I am encouraging and supporting their classroom performance. I am the first to admit that I love constructive criticism and ideas from others to better myself as a teacher, which is why I will encourage ideas and feedback from the parents of my students, and also from my colleagues at the school. I already meet with my cooperating teacher once a week to discuss what I did that week while I was teaching that she liked, and some things I need to improve on. I will also make it very clear that every parent/guardian should feel more than welcome to suggest any fun and interesting websites, books, or activities they would like to see implemented in their child’s curriculum. I have been present for several parent-teacher conferences for my Level II internship and I discuss this with the parents. I want them to know that even though I am only an intern right now, that my role in that classroom is to foster those children’s development as far as I can. I also want them to know I feel it is crucial for their participation in their child’s academic success. I know the importance of collaborating with the knowledge and experience of specialists in the school: ESE and ESOL specialists, guidance counselor, and reading and math coaches. I know these individuals are in the schools to help each and every student who would benefit, and I believe this is also a role of the teacher to utilize these fellow teachers and specialists to help your students. I also mention in my management plan the importance of the community to student learning. I plan to incorporate educational fieldtrips that supplement a particular unit we are covering. I also will encourage guest speakers to come in and talk to the children about related topics we are learning about in class. I feel this helps students realize that what they learn in the classroom really is important in real-life situations. For example, the day before the 2008 Presidential Election, my cooperating teacher and I took our class on a field trip to Ruth Eckerd Hall to see a play called VOTE! This was about students who were confused about politics, the voting process, and how to choose a candidate to vote for. It was a fun and educational play and the students really enjoyed it. During this time, they had been all doing reports on a presidential candidate, and after this play, they each added another page or so to their writing from what they learned from it. It really motivated them to really want to learn about our government and voting. The next day, we held a mock debate in class, and two students got to pretend to be Obama and McCain, use debating and rebuttal strategies they learned, and then the class held a mock election. It was really a fun activity for them and every child learned things even I never knew about the voting process and our 2008 Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates.
